Senator Ed Markey famously got a big boost in his re-election campaign against Representative Joe Kennedy last year from young progressive activists, who placed heavy emphasis on policies like the Green New Deal and used social media to effectively expand their reach. Now many of those same organizers are putting pressure on Markey over his response to Israelâs deadly airstrikes of Gaza following Hamas rockets.
To discuss the role of youth activism in Massachusetts politics, Adam Reilly was joined by local political organizers Lillian Gibson and Calla Walsh, who both worked to re-elect Markey in 2020, and Ellen Barry, New England Bureau Chief for the New York Times. âThereâs definitely a fear that your candidate could be the next Joe Kennedy,â Barry said about what she heard from Democrats while reporting.

Four years ago, Justin Gibson grabbed his camera and headed out to the Lincoln Marathon route to get some pictures of his mom.
It was already tricky because Lillian Gibson aptly nicknamed Lil was short and easy to miss in the throng.
But there was another reason.
âWhen I saw her, she was running sideways to say hello to someone, which was kind of typical,â her youngest son said.
Lil was a registered nurse and worked at the Dialysis Center of Lincoln. Sheâd run in lots of half-marathons and a few full marathons, too.

Over the past year, as the reality of COVID-19 has unfolded, it is startling to realize that some 95.6 million people have contracted the disease of whom 2.04 million have died. In the United States alone there have been 24.1 million cases with over 399,000 deaths.[1]
At first it didn’t seem that serious. Our kids enjoyed having an extra-long Spring Break. It became more real as people who we personally knew got sick, and a few even died. Other friends lost their jobs. As the pandemic has raged on, those who have pre-existing health conditions or who are elderly have been the most vulnerable. As scientists come to better understand the disease, we have come to learn how simple practices like wearing masks (over your mouth and nose) and practicing social distancing can help mitigate the spread of COVID-19.
