QUINCY The owner of two popular South Shore restaurants announced Sunday that he was using $30,000 in pre-Christmas gift card sales to pay bonuses to the staff of his restaurants.
Leo Keka owns Alba, an upscale steak and seafood house in Quincy Center and Alba on 53 in Hanover, which opened this past August. The money is his way of thanking employees for successfully battling through a year that otherwise devastated the restaurant industry.
The bonuses also mark the 30th anniversary of Keka s arrival in America, according to a message on Alba s Facebook page.
Keka arrived in Boston in 1990 as an Albania refugee. He knew next to nothing about the U.S. He was 20, and didn’t speak any English. He worked his way up in the restaurant industry, starting by washing dishes, then waiting tables at Anthony’s Pier 4, the legendary Seaport restaurant owned by fellow Albanian immigrant, Anthony Athanas.
