Preschool awarded for its handling of Covid-19, terror attack and wildfire

ALDEN WILLIAMS/STUFF Moa Kids Community Early Learning Centre is one of eleven recipients of an ‘ECE Hero’ award, nominated by the community and acknowledging heroism over the last year. Working with youngsters can be challenging at the best of times but staff at a Christchurch preschool have been praised for their handling of the Covid-19 lockdown and the support they provided after the March 15 terror attack and a recent wildfire. Moa Kids Community Preschool in Redcliffs was one of 11 early childhood education centres (ECEs) to be recognised in the ‘ECE Hero’ awards. Backed by teaching union NZEI Te Riu Roa, the recipients were announced on Sunday – Children’s Day – , with judges saying Moa Kids was a “much deserved” winner.

“I wouldn’t be doing it if I wasn’t passionate about the cause, about trying to get early childhood teachers valued more, I think until we are valued until the same as other people, we’ve just got to keep going. “If I can persuade anyone else to come on that journey then that’s great.” Kemi Niko & Co/NZEI Te Riu Roa Burgess was recognised, along with the team at Adelaide Early Childhood Centre, for advocating for better pay and working conditions for early childhood teachers. It was humbling to have been recognised as part of the awards.

It includes award recipients Sophie Hawkes, who s the Rising ECE Hero and Community Heroes Hayley Strachan and the Moa Kids Team. NZEI President Liam Rutherford says parents, whanau groups and educators put forward amazing submissions. He says the response from early childhood teachers through Covid-19 has highlighted they re in the job because they have the best interest of children at heart.
