The Skanner News - County Extends Rent Grace Period for Tenants Who Have Applied for Assistance

County Extends Rent Grace Period for Tenants Who Have Applied for Assistance Published: 13 July 2021 With the state declining to extend the eviction moratorium further, the Multnomah County Board of Commissioners has voted to give a 90-day period of protection to tenants who can show documentation that they have applied for rent assistance. A statewide moratorium on all evictions enacted to protect tenants during the pandemic expired last month, despite a push to include an extension in the recently passed Senate Bill 282. Under that provision, tenants cannot be evicted for back rent owed from April 2020 until June 30 of this year, and they now have until February 2022 to repay landlords. But SB 282 did nothing to ease the minds of tenants who are still unable to make rent this month and any time after.

This small Caribbean island fully embraces Bitcoin in absence of banks

Bequia, a small island in the Caribbean just 18 square kilometers in size, is primed to become the world’s first fully Bitcoin-enabled community,  Euronews reported earlier this week. In the near future, development company One Bequia is planning to build 39 luxury villas here, touting itself as “the only real estate development in the Caribbean to accept Bitcoin.” However, the adoption of cryptocurrencies is more of a necessity for small island communities rather than idle curiosity. “The adoption of cryptocurrency is far from a gimmick,” said Storm Gonsalves, head of the One Bequia project, adding, “It’s a response to the very real challenges faced by island communities increasingly cut-off from mainstream banking facilities.”
