Lib Dem Green council leaders? Haven t we had all this before?

SOME readers may today be getting a sinking sense of deja vu. Just two years ago in May 2019, people across South Oxfordshire were celebrating after they ousted the ruling Conservatives from their district council and installed. a rainbow coalition of Liberal Democrat and Green councillors. The left wing parties had rocketed to power largely on the platform that they were going to challenge massive housebuilding proposals for the district and tear up the Tories’ Local Plan. What was it that Robert Burns said about ‘the best laid schemes o’ mice an’ men.?’ Within a year, the Government’s Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick told the council that if they even tried to overturn the Local Plan that he would block them from doing so and get the then-Tory led county council to take over their duties.

Damning report: Residents asked to advise council on transparency panel

West Offices, City of York Council’s headquarters A CITIZENS’ advisory panel will be set up by City of York Council to encourage residents to help improve transparency and leadership at the authority. The panel will be created as part of an action plan to help the council recover from a critical public interest report into its handling of a £404,000 payout to the former chief executive. But opposition councillors branded the panel an “attempt to divert attention” away from Liberal Democrat council leader Keith Aspden, whose role in approving the payout was discussed in the auditors’ public interest report. Cllr Aspden survived a vote of no confidence this week thanks to the support of Green Party councillors and his own colleagues.

A LETTER explaining why a judge refused to allow a courtroom challenge to an Oxfordshire housing plan has revealed the £8,000 legal costs which campaigners face. Last week high court judge Justice Ian Dove refused a judicial review application, which would have seen South Oxfordshire District Council s 30,000-home Local Plan challenged in the court on environmental grounds. Justice Dove refused the application, and a letter sent to South Oxfordshire councillors seen by this paper explained why.
