Philippines Tops 1 Million Infections as Region Struggles to Contain COVID-19 Waves

Basilio Sepe/BenarNews The Philippines on Monday surpassed the 1 million mark in coronavirus cases recorded since the pandemic began in March 2020, as the Southeast Asian country and others in the region struggle to contain surging waves in the global outbreak. The Philippine health department said it had recorded 8,929 new COVID-19 cases within the past 24 hours that took the country past the grim milestone. The department also logged 70 virus-related deaths, bringing the total to 16,853.  The surge “has placed hospitals under siege,” the Philippine Red Cross said, noting it was “urgently setting up field hospitals, quarantine facilities and scaling up existing testing laboratories.”

India Halting Export:Oxygen crunch may turn grave Photo: Collected The sudden halt to oxygen import from India amid the second Covid-19 wave may put Bangladesh in a precarious position if the current coronavirus situation deteriorates, fear health officials and suppliers. Facing an acute shortage of oxygen due to a record rise in virus infections, India imposed a ban on export of industrial oxygen from April 22 to cope with its huge demand. Bangladesh used to meet 15-20 percent of its monthly requirement of around 5,400 tonnes of both industrial and medical oxygen through import from India. Oxygen suppliers in the country said they are still managing the supply chain for public and private hospitals by switching their production to medical oxygen from industrial one.

35 cos get 7th ICSB Award Staff Correspondent 25th January, 2021 12:00:10 35 companies have been conferred for corporate governance excellence award for the year 2019 by Institute of Chartered Secretaries of Bangladesh (ICSB).   Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi handed over the crests and certificates of 7th ICSB National Award to the winning companies in 13 categories covering all listed companies under DSE and CSE at an event at a city hotel on Saturday evening. In the general banking sector BRAC Bank bagged the gold while Eastern Bank Limited and Bank Asia received silver and bronze respectively.  In Islamic banking sector, Islami Bank Bangladesh achieved the gold while Shahjalal Islami Bank and Al-Arafah Islami Bank obtained silver and bronze respectively.
