“Lunch is ready,” I called out to my husband and daughter, setting the serving dish down on the dining table. On cue, Anoushka, my 14-year-old, reached out to open the lid to check what was inside.
We were having khichdi – mashed lentils, diced vegetables and rice topped with caramelised onions. “Did you know that the British kedgeree (a mix of rice, flaked fish and boiled eggs) is inspired by our khichdi?” Anoushka asked, drizzling spoonfuls of ghee (clarified butter) onto the khichdi on her plate.
She was studying the colonial history of India for her upcoming exams and trivia was her way of making the subject easier. I did know the khichdi-kedgeree connection. I am sure there are more, I replied. “Wouldn’t it be cool if we could find out what Indian dishes were behind some of the colonisers’ cuisine and cook them?” the budding chef asked excitedly.

What better way for the students to showcase one of their many talents in cultural niches than on a huge stage in front of thousands of people. The cosmopolitan festival was brought into existence with this exact motive in mind. The sheer ethnic diversity on display was a commendable sight for the NITR Junta to enjoy.

Ahmedabad to Calcutta road-trip in a Skoda Karoq
Working and living in Ahmedabad, getting transferred to Calcutta is a great opportunity for a road trip! Me & the missus wanted to drive down when I was transferred to Ahmedabad, too, but the kid was just 6mo then. Planned for end of November, the weather promised to be excellent.
Route & Preparations
As for the route - decided against driving through MP based on feedback that roads after Indore were in poor shape. Chose to drive through Jaipur Agra Varanasi Durgapur, with stops in all these places. Which is 300kms more. Aim was to drive not more than 12 hours/day, minimize consecutive 10-12hr drives and see places along the way.
