Track and field returns to action against SNHU, Allan awarded UAA Athlete of the Week honors
For the first time since 2019, Brandeis’ outdoor track and field teams were back to running, jumping and throwing. The Judges headed down to nearby Weston High School to compete against the Penmen of Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) in a non-scoring meet. The SNHU squad was short-handed, as the men’s and women’s distance teams were unable to make the trip to Massachusetts due to health and safety precautions. In compliance with Brandeis’ return to play guidelines for varsity spring athletics, no spectators were allowed.
The first YA book to deal with HIV/AIDS was M. E. Kerr’s
Night Kites. Published in 1986, the novel features a teenage protagonist whose older brother is sick with AIDS-related illnesses. As Christine Jenkins and Michael Cart point out, this novel did not inspire a trend: HIV/AIDS “would receive major thematic or topical treatment in only three other YA novels in the eighties.”
In addition to the four novels published in the 1980s, only thirteen texts “that included any character who was HIV positive or had AIDS appeared in the nineties.” Moreover, just one of the affected characters in these thirteen books is a young person; the rest are adults, “usually uncles or teachers.” Lydia Kokkola concludes that, during this time period, HIV/AIDS functions mostly as a “punishment” for sexually active and/or queer characters.
On this record Akeem Ali’s fresh sound takes listeners on a nostalgic ride back into the 70’s while still maintaining a new and unique feel that captivates his audience.
Keemy Casanova, Akeem Ali’s alter persona, reminds us of a groovy dude that the ladies love. His keen way of fusing humor and raw lyricism within his music is definitely a style that hasn’t been seen and Akeem does it flawlessly. His 2020 version of 1970’s ‘pimpin’ is something that catches the attention, leading to his Instagram video snippet doing over 185K views.
