A survey of rare plants has been completed at Waikato s internationally significant Whangamarino Wetland, with excitement over the rediscovery of a seldom-found carnivorous species.
It s been more than a decade since threatened plants have been surveyed at Whangamarino Wetland, with the last survey undertaken in 2009.
Covering almost 7000 ha in the Waikato, Whangamarino is the second-largest freshwater wetland in the North Island and one of three Ramsar (internationally significant) wetlands in the Department of Conservation s (DoC) Hauraki-Waikato-Taranaki region.
People from across Eden invited to light up the district
Light Up Eden Festival coming March 20
People from across Eden are invited to light up the district in a new project launched this week.
The programme leads up to the Light Up festival at the March Spring Equinox on March 20 – and it is hoped individuals, businesses and schools to light up 1,000 windows, doorsteps or gardens with homemade lanterns.
Highlights Rural Touring and Eden District Council are working together on the scheme.
They are planning a range of COVID-secure arts activities and events, on and offline.
Over the next two months, Highlights will be hosting online workshops in lantern making, writing, singing and performance and inviting people of all ages and abilities to join in.
Despite the difficulty caused by Covid, one group has made every effort to contribute to community projects – raising more than £6,000 for all to benefit from. After an appeal raised the impressive amount of vital funds, the Lodges of the East Lakes Freemasons nominated three charities to each benefit from a £2,000 grant. And Chairman Glyn Titterington was thrilled to recently present cheques to the Beep Fund Trust, Alston Recreation Ground Trust and Eden Valley Friends of Dementia in a socially-distanced setting. Dr Theo Weston MBE set up the Beep Fund in April 1994, developing a key service of Immediate Response Vehicles. A total of 15 doctors, whose cars are equipped with necessary emergency equipment, now cover most of Cumbria, from Kendal to the Scottish Border.

Producers of Scotlandâs largest community choir, Love Music, have âblind dateâ matched a number of community choirs and songwriters as part of the Love Singing contest.
Beating off opposition from across Scotland to claim one of just five places available is Fochabers Community Sing, who were formed only last year. They will be working with Glasgow-based singer/songwriter Zac Scott, who describes his sound as Indie/acoustic/pop .
