Latest COVID update Jan 28: 11 deaths, 244 new cases

(Lisa Schick/980 CJME file photo) The death toll in Saskatchewan due to COVID-19 rose to 285 on Thursday, when the provincial government announced the deaths of 11 residents. Six people in the 80-and-over age group four from the Regina zone and two from the Saskatoon area were among those who passed away. Two people in their 60s (one from the north-central zone, one from the Saskatoon area), two individuals in their 70s (one from each of the far northeast and northwest zones) and one person in their 40s (from the far northeast zone) also died. The Ministry of Health reported there were 244 new cases, increasing the provincial total since March to 23,038.

(Lisa Schick/980 CJME file photo)   Saskatchewan reported its highest-ever total of hospitalizations due to COVID-19 on Wednesday while also reporting its lowest total of new cases in nearly a month. There are 220 people in Saskatchewan hospitals, breaking the previous high of 210. The province also announced there were 149 new cases, the lowest such total since 147 cases were reported Dec. 30. There also were six deaths reported, increasing the province’s total since March to 274. The latest deaths were four people in the 80-and-over age group who lived in the Saskatoon area, a person in their 50s from the Saskatoon zone, and one individual in their 60s from the north-central area.

In a media release Thursday, the Ministry of Health said 13 residents of the province had died due to the coronavirus. The previous single-day high of 11 deaths was reported Dec. 12. To date, 239 Saskatchewan residents have died after testing positive for COVID-19. The deaths reported Thursday included nine people in the 80-and-over age group, with six from the Saskatoon area and one from each of the far northeast, north-central and southeast regions. Three people in their 70s one from each of the Saskatoon, far north-central and north-central zones passed away, as did a person in their 60s who lived in the Saskatoon region.
