Helping hand for the homeless The Mano y Mano Day Labor Program started by the City of Las Cruces and Mesilla Valley Community Hope provides work to people experiencing homeless here in Las Cruces. The program pays up to $45 a day and much of the work is beautifying the city of Las Cruces, including trash pick up, gardening, and cleaning up public parks.

Third District Judge Lisa Schultz retires

Third District Judge Lisa Schultz retires LAS CRUCES - Third Judicial District Judge Lisa Schultz has left the building.  Her time with the Third District came to an end on June 30, leaving a vacancy that officials hope to fill within the next few months.  Schultz had been on the bench in Doña Ana County since 2006. Voters retained her in 2020. Her cases will be dolled out to other Third District judges by former Third District Judge Jeanne Hetzel Quintero. Quintero was appointed as a special master by Chief Judge Manuel Arrieta.  Beverly Akin of the Judicial Selection Office said in a news release that applications to fill Schultz s seat are due Friday, July 16. She said the Third Judicial District Court Judicial Nominating Commission will convene beginning at 9 a.m. July 28 to review the candidates.
