Coles replaces Little Shop toys with plastic picnicware Share A week after scrapping plastic Little Shop and Stikees toys as part of a strategy to become Australia’s most sustainable retailer, Coles has launched its latest collectibles program, plastic picnicware The plastic picnicware also follows Coles’ decision to stop selling single-use plastic tableware, including disposable cups, plates, bowls and cutlery, earlier this month. Coles’ chief marketing officer, Lisa Ronson, said the new loyalty program, which kicks off next Wednesday, gives customers an opportunity to replace disposable tableware by collecting a range of reusable plastic picnicware suitable for use in the home or outdoors.

A move by Coles to ditch plastic collectables as part of its broader efforts to improve its environmental credentials shows how sustainability is fast becoming the new frontier for Australian retailers.  The supermarket giant’s Little Shop collectable promotion was once so popular that shoppers would fight over the miniature plastic toys, and opportunistic sellers cashed in by selling complete sets on Gumtree.  But following consumer backlash in 2019 which was also directed at similar promotions from rival Woolworths and feedback from its own customers, Coles has today announced it won’t offer the Little Shop and Stikeez plastic toy programs again.

Coles hugely anticipated Little Shop collectables will now be a thing of the past as the supermarket giant announces it will no longer give away plastic toys as part of its sustainability strategy. The collectables featured miniature replicas of some of Australia s most iconic grocery products - including Vegemite, Nutella, Tim Tams, Weet-Bix, Arnott s Shapes, Heinz Baked Beans, Tip Top bread and Campbell s tomato soup. The campaign has been a huge hit among thousands of shoppers across the country since launching in 2018, with dedicated Facebook groups and swap day events set up so parents and children alike can meet up and trade to complete their collection.

Coles commits to no more plastic collectibles in sustainable campaign July 23, 2021 8:53 Coles has reaffirmed its commitment to becoming Australia’s most sustainable supermarket, with a campaign commencing on Sunday 26 July via DDB Australia. As part of its sustainability efforts, Coles has committed to no longer give away collectible plastic toys as part of its rewards program. The national campaign is based on Coles’ ‘Together to Zero’ pillar in its sustainability strategy, which was first revealed in March, as well as the “Better Together” pillar. The 60-second spot features a montage of Coles throughout history, showing the impact Coles has had across several generations. The spot ends in the line: “Together to zero: zero hunger, zero waste, and zero emissions. For generations to come.”
