Introducing The Hawk Eye s Citizen Scholar Class of 2021 The Hawk Eye Each year, The Hawk Eye asks schools in southeast Iowa and west central Illinois to nominate three students for the Bill Mertens Citizen Scholar Award.  While eachnominee is worthy of the Citizen Scholar title, only one from each school can be selected for a chance at a $1,000 scholarship, named for The Hawk Eye s late publisher who established it in 2001, the third year of the Citizen Scholars program. The winner will be announced May 30. The minimum requirement for consideration was a 3.5 grade-point average. Nominees also were expected to demonstrate a four-year career of active engagement in the life of their school and community through participation and leadership in extra-curricular activities, as well as participation in events and organizations beyond their classroom walls in the places where they live.

Kissell Headlines Four Warrior Girls on All-Conference

Four WACO girls’ basketball players received postseason recognition from the Southeast Iowa Super Conference being named to the all conference teams. Ellah Kissell was the headliner being named to the first team in the South Division. The 5’10’’ sharp shooter had the most made threes in the division with 50 on the season while shooting at a 38% clip. Her 14.3 points a game ranked fifth in the league and the sophomore also hauled in 5.5 rebounds a night, totaled 55 assists, and 38 steals. Morgan Graber was named to the second team. The 5’10’’ senior was a defensive force with a conference leading three blocks an outing while chipping in with 8.4 points and 6.6 rebounds. Aubri Garnsey and Grace Coble rounded out the selections being named honorable mention. Garnsey paced the team with 72 assists and 54 steals while Coble averaged 5.7 points and 6.6 boards a contest. Huskies and Warriors Meet Up to Start Regional Play

Two area squads and only one can move on. That’s the scenario in Wayland tonight when the WACO girls’ basketball team plays host to Highland in a first round class 1A regional. The Warriors concluded the regular season 7-12, but won two of their final three including a 25-point beatdown of ranked Van Buren. Ellah Kissell has been a catalyst with 13.9 out of their 45 points a game. Morgan Graber adds 8.3 points and Grace Coble brings in 6.6 boards a night. Highland is 2-12 and they last fell to Louisa-Muscatine 62-34 on Tuesday. Dani Laughlin records 14.4 points a game while shooting 34% from the floor. Sarah Burton controls the rebounding department with 7.4. Turnovers have been a bugaboo for both teams with 23 and 25 a game, respectively. This is the first meeting between these two programs in five years.
