Camdenton Speech and Debate team competes in 64th Annual Bob Bilyeu Winter Classic

The Camdenton High School Speech and Debate team competed virtually in the 64th Annual Bob Bilyeu Winter Classic by Parkview and Central High Schools. There were 37 schools that participated in the virtual event, with over 750 entries in the tournament. All members of the high school team did well. The following students placed in the top five:
Katie Winn 2nd place in Novice Program of Oral Interpretation
Robert Lewis and Amy Santos Gonzalez 2nd place in Novice Public Forum Debate
Wyatt Mueller 3rd place in Novice Lincoln Douglas debate

Lance Arrow, left, and Dan Slightom, from Arrow Outdoor Signs and Advertising, work to install a replacement marker at the corner of Broadway and State Street in Alton. The previous sign, part of about 10 historical markers tracking buildings and other area of interest related to the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debate, was destroyed by the semi-great Flood of 2019. This particular marker identifies the nearby building that once housed the Franklin House hotel, which was used as Abraham Lincoln’s debate headquarters.
ALTON A new marker has been placed at the corner of Broadway and State streets in Alton to replace one damaged during flooding in 2019.

A group of Shady Side Academy Junior and Middle School families organized a “No Hungry Kids!” fundraiser to support the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank in December and raised more than $5,300.
The Delfyett, Iannetti, Khalil, Walsh and Zureikat families created a video that was shown during Zoom assemblies at both schools and also emailed to parents to educate the community about hunger and the importance of nutrition. The team of students raised $5,301 from 67 donors.
PHS debate team takes third in tournament

PORTSMOUTH - The New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts end-of-season High School Debate Tournament known as the “Christmas Chlassich” was hosted by Manhattan’s Regis High School on Dec. 19 with 550 students competing from 35 schools. With the online format, the tournament allowed participation from Portsmouth High School and other guest schools from South Carolina and Idaho.
States with mature debate programs (referred to as Forensic) have teams that compete in multiple formats, e.g. Lincoln Douglas, mock Congress (House and Senate), Oral Interpretation and Public Forum. The NH Debate League only has seven participating schools, so Public Forum, in which teams of two debaters argue for or against the resolution topic, is the only option in the state.
