LAS CRUCES – After a year of adjusted learning models, social distancing and cancelled events, high school students in Las Cruces Public Schools began returning to class in-person in late February and early March just in time to start planning in-person prom. We talked about (holding a prom) while we were still actually completely, virtually doing school, Las Cruces High senior and student body president Miranda Romero said. We had talked about doing something through Zoom … just so that it could be something that the seniors are able to remember. But it wasn t until we found out we were going to be coming into school in-person that … we (started to) consider doing it in person.

LAS CRUCES - Police arrested a pair of teenagers suspected of breaking into an enclosed area at Las Cruces High School on Sunday, stealing a utility vehicle and then leading officers on a brief pursuit before they were detained.
The two teenage boys are a 15-year-old who was seen driving the utility vehicle and his 16-year-old passenger. Because of their ages, the Las Cruces police will not release their names.
Both teens are charged with a felony count of non-residential burglary and a misdemeanor count of resisting, evading or obstructing an officer. The 15-year-old boy also faces felony charges of battery upon a peace officer and tampering with evidence.
LAS CRUCES – The family of Khyana Sky Morales, 19, who passed away Dec. 5, 2020, has established a foundation in the teen’s honor and will begin awarding scholarships to Doña Ana County students this fall.
Morales was found unresponsive in early October 2020 and required CPR, having gone without blood or oxygen to her brain for an unspecified amount of time. She was taken to MountainView Regional Medical Center where she spent time in the intensive care unit.
Manny Morales, Khyana’s father said that due to the publicity and local support surrounding his daughter’s medical fight, the GoFundMe set up to support her raised over $14,000. The family decided to establish a foundation in Khyana’s name and put the excess money to use by awarding scholarships to local students in need.
LCPS set dates for high school proms with Covid precautions
LAS CRUCES, New Mexico After the mayhem of the so-called secret prom, all high schools in the Las Cruces Public Schools district now have a date for an approved prom locked in.
Las Cruces High School will be this Friday, April 23rd. Arrowhead Park Early College High School will be May 1st, Mayfield High School May 8th and Centennial and Onate High Schools will have theirs May 15th.
But how can these schools put on a prom and it not be considered a mass gathering? We take to extreme measures the safety of our students, constant mask wearing, hand sanitizer, opportunities for hand washing, being outside and being socially distanced,” Kelly Jameson, an LCPS spokesperson, said. “We know those things mitigate the spread of Covid-19 more so than being in mass gathering that s indoors, not socially distanced and not following safety protocols such as wearing a mask.
