LADOT count shows a 22% increase in biking, 6% drop in walking in 2019 from 2017

LADOT count shows a 22% increase in biking, 6% drop in walking in 2019 from 2017 The Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) has published findings and data from its inaugural study counting the number of people biking and walking on Los Angeles streets. The count, which took place at 63 intersections over several weekends in 2019, reveals trends in active transportation while observing the demographics of Angelenos traveling through the city. LADOT was set to capture travel at 40 additional locations in spring 2020, but due to irregular travel patterns and safety concerns as the result of the COVID-19 pandemic, this count was postponed indefinitely. Observations show a significant increase in the number of people walking and biking in locations where LADOT has made safety and complete street improvements. While the survey showed that women make up only 14% of people biking, there is a 120% increase in female riders on streets with dedicated bike paths.

Costa Mesa s Jimmy Vivar sees a bright future ahead

Print Vivar means “to live” in Spanish, and Jimmy Vivar has done plenty of living in his quarter-century on this Earth. Vivar, a Costa Mesa resident, was born with an degenerative eyesight condition called Retinitis pigmentosa. He has very little sight, a field of vision that’s like a pinhole, and extreme difficulty seeing at night. He usually walks with a cane. “Sometimes people ask for percentages,” Vivar said. “I don’t exactly know what the percentage of vision would be, but I do have problems with peripheral vision. Playing sports or Frisbee would be hard, seeing things from further away and coming close into my field of vision. Being able to navigate new areas is also difficult. Figuring out how deep a set of stairs are, or in a new place, where a fire hydrant might be, for example. And if there’s a white fire hydrant and a white building behind it, I’ll probably miss that.”
