Picture: SUPPLIED Andrews Primary School students in Nadi were among students assisted by the Australian government which gave school bags and stationery for the start of another academic year. Minister for Education Rosy Akbar acknowledged the timely gift and said more than 1500 students in the Lau Group were also assisted under the program. “This isn’t the only donation that our friends from Australia have helped us with,” she said. “A total of 1500 backpacks have already been loaded and ready to ship to the Lau Group and it will benefit another 1500 students over there.”

The donation was made to Fiji-based NGO Sai Prema Foundation who will include the products as part of their relief packs. The products donated include canned baked beans and spaghetti, sanitary pads, children’s diapers, mosquito coils, batteries, washing powder and juice packs.

Picture: SOPHIE RALULU The Sai Prema Foundation with Laxmi Narayan Temple and Hanuman Chalisa Pariwar assisted 7000 people living in areas affected by STC Yasa. Foundation director Sumeet Tappoo said he and a team of 30 travelled from Suva to Vanua Levu to deliver the “buckets full of love” to people who were in desperate need for food and basic needs. He said the buckets contained basic food items and other necessities for the villagers. “The members and I were deeply touched and saddened by the plight of the people who were devastated by Yasa,” he said.
