Lao migrant workers are coming home in large numbers from Thailand but are bringing COVID-19 with them, driving up new infections in Laos, which has recently seen a drop in the number of domestic cases, Lao sources say.
Up to 246,757 Lao workers have returned from Thailand since the pandemic began, with around 150,000 coming back in 2020 and their numbers now increasing day by day, Lao and Thai labor officials confirmed in a virtual meeting held on July 9.
Around 893 returned to Laos on July 11, Sisavath Southanilaxay Deputy Director General of the Department of Communicable Disease Control told a news conference that day, while an official in southern Laos’ Champassak province said on July 8 that around 200 workers had crossed each day into his province in the last five days.

VIENTIANE, March 10 (Vientiane Times/ANN): The Royal Thai Embassy to Laos has provided cash and materials worth over 16 million baht to the Lao government to support efforts to combat the Covid-19 outbreak.
The donated items were handed over in Vientiane recently by the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Thailand to Laos, Jesda Katavetin, on behalf of the Thai government to Minister of Health and Deputy Head of the National Taskforce for Covid-19 Prevention and Control, Dr Dr Bounfeng Phommalaisith.
The Thai government’s donation together with medical supplies totalled 12.8 million baht (4.1 billion kip). Donations worth 4.3 million baht delivered on Friday (May 7) comprised a cash donation of 2 million baht, 180 patient beds, 50,000 medical masks, 2,370 pieces of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and six mobile swab testing units for use in hospitals in Bokeo province.

NDO/VNA – Vietnam is ready to provide support within its capability to Laos in overcoming difficulties that Laos faces in COVID-19 prevention and control work, standing member of the Party Central Committee’s Secretariat Vo Van Thuong said.
The official made the pledge during a reception in Hanoi on April 27 for Lao Ambassador to Vietnam Sengphet Houngboungnuang.
Thuong expressed his delight at the development of the special solidarity between Vietnam and Laos, and affirmed that Vietnam will work together with Laos to protect and foster the ties between the two countries.
