Bangladesh is celebrating âBijoy Diboshâ, Victory Day to mark the day it attained liberation from Pakistan and became an independent nation in 1971 under the leadership of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
As a mark of respect to the martyrs of the Liberation War of Bangladesh, wreaths were placed at the National Memorial in Savar on the outskirts of Dhaka on behalf of the President M. Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the morning on Wednesday.
The Victory Day is being observed on a limited scale due to the prevailing Corona pandemic in the country.

DHAKA, Dec 15, 2020 (BSS) – Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today cautioned the countrymen against the reappearance of fanaticism in her Victory Day speech, saying her government was determined to prevent any attempt to use religion as a “political weapon” to create social unrests.
“Don’t use religion as a political tool . . . we will not allow anyone to create any anarchy or division in this country in the name of religion,” she said in her nationwide televised address.
Sheikh Hasina said a section of defeated forces of 1971 reappeared in the political landscape to mislead ordinary pious Muslims with concocted and confusing messages to create social unrests to return the country to a situation which the nation overcame 50 years ago.
