New high school grads to come first in Jacksonville-area job fair

Just in time for cap-and-gown season, new high school graduates will be at the head of the line in a virtual job fair that CareerSource Northeast Florida is hosting Thursday. The online fair’s first hour – between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. – is reserved for the new graduates. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., anyone can join the fair, where more than 100 area businesses will be looking for employees. To take part, job seekers have to register at http://bit.ly/virtualjob520. The fair is happening on the first day of Duval County public schools’ graduation season, which continues through June 7.

How students forced Duval Schools to confront classroom racial justice

After months of watching civil rights demonstrations through the country and on the streets of Jacksonville at times even participating themselves the students were surprised when in February the school district didn t seize the opportunity to use Black History Month as an education tool to drive lessons about local racial justice movements and Black history. Instead, the school district launched its own inaugural month-long campaign for mental health and suicide awareness called You Matter Month. While that campaign had its own issues because it encouraged students to #TakeOffYourMask during a global pandemic, some students worried the language minimized Black Lives Matter campaigns and hijacked the attention from the sole month annually centered around Black lives.

Health department reports roughly twice the COVID-19 cases as DCPS dashboard

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Duval County families have two official sources of information about the spread of the coronavirus in their local schools the statewide report published approximately once a week by the Florida Department of Health and the Duval County Public Schools COVID-19 Dashboard, updated daily. However, the two have different criteria for which cases are included in their respective reports. As of Dec. 13, the FDOH report shows 1,326 confirmed cases of the virus among students and staff within DCPS, while at the time the district’s dashboard reported only 649 cases. As of Thursday, the district dashboard showed 683 cases. While the statewide school report includes all students and staff whether they are working remotely or not, the district’s dashboard excludes infected students and staff who participate in the virtual format.
