The Gardner Scene: Lawrence Welk gets a second chance

NewsSportsEntertainmentLifestyleOpinionUSA TODAYObituariesE-EditionLegals The Gardner Scene: Lawrence Welk gets a second chance Never a big fan in his youth, columnist Mike Richard now finds reruns of the family-friendly TV show a reminder of happier, simpler times Mike Richard Special for The Gardner News The Facebook posting read, “Don’t Tell Me About Your Childhood Problems. I was Forced to Watch Lawrence Welk as a Kid.” It made me chuckle at first sight, and then pause to pine a bit for the good old Saturday nights of my youth. When I was growing up in the 1960s, the oldest in a family of five kids, Saturday nights meant hot dogs and beans for supper, the weekly dunk in the bathtub, and – wrapped in my bathrobe with a choice spot on the floor – gathering around our lone black and white console TV set.

You may not be allowed back in – warning to those leaving

You may not be allowed back in’ – warning to those leaving Those who chose to leave the Island are being warned they may not be allowed back in. With the announcement of a second lockdown from after midnight tonight, borders returned to level five of the government’s framework. It means only returning residents and key workers can enter the Island. Those seeking to leave are being told there’s no guarantee borders won’t be further restricted, meaning if they chose to travel, they do so at the risk of potentially being unable to return in future. It’s one of the messages given by the chief minister as he outlined a raft of new rules in preparation for the Island’s second lockdown.

My light bulb moment: Deodorant pioneer Laurie Hooper

Laurie Hooper, 36, co-founded The Natural Deodorant Co. with former husband Brett in 2015. She lives in Essex with her new partner Chris, her two children, Tabitha, 12, Seth, nine, and her stepson Ashton, six. Growing up in Essex, I left school and went to work on the beauty counters for Clarins and Clinique. Then, in 2008, I got pregnant and became very aware of what I was putting in and on my body, so I switched to organic products. However, the natural beauty world was a minefield; there weren’t many options. Most deodorants were alcohol-based sprays you had to re-apply during the day. I didn’t trust them for important events, but smelling bad was an absolute no.
