History Spotlight: The Wilson House

History Spotlight: The Wilson House Larry Michaels and Krista Michaels Columnists Early Home on Croghan Street, c. 1890s Seen here is the large Greek-Revival home of the influential Fremont physician and banker James Wilson, for whom Wilson Street is named. Built as early as the 1860s, it faced Croghan on the southwest corner of High Street. At the right can be seen the back of the old Central School (1891-1930) that stood on the corner of Garrison and Park Avenue. When Ross High School was built in 1909, the stately old Victorian home was moved south several blocks to the southwest corner of Ewing and High Street, where it still stands beautifully preserved today. History Spotlight: Sitting on the Verandah

History Spotlight: Sitting on the Verandah Larry Michaels and Krista Michaels Columnists Sitting on the Verandah, 1880s This couple sitting together on the front porch, as you must know, is Rutherford and Lucy Hayes after their return to Spiegel Grove from the White House in 1881. As recorded in Hayes diary, they both enjoyed those busy and productive years back in Fremont very much before Lucy s death in 1889. Hayes in particular wanted that wide verandah. On rainy days he was known to walk back and forth 38 times, which equalled a mile. He died four years later in 1893, and his last recorded words were, I know that I am going where Lucy is.
