HALFWAY â Jon Hanley is a temporary resident of Halfway, but heâs leaving a permanent mark.
Hanley is wrapping up a mural at the Old Pine Market that depicts the history of horses in Pine Valley.
âHeâs doing a beautiful job. I love coming in and seeing the new progress,â said Laurie Bryan, an owner of the market.
Hanley paints after hours, adding a colorful touch to a previously blank wall above the produce area.
âIâve had murals on my mind,â Bryan said. âI knew Jon was a fabulous mural painter, and he showed up in town.â
His work space is a challenge â a ledge about 3 feet deep and 3 feet high, so he has to kneel or lay on his side to paint.

Major amendments to Hancock’s 2021 warrant are unlikely after little discourse at a virtual informational session on Saturday. This year’s virtual Town Meeting format precluded residents proposing amendments themselves, instead, participants were asked to submit questions and concerns to the Select Board by Monday, and the Select Board would make any changes to the warrant if there was clear community support. The Select Board is scheduled to finalize the warrant during a second informational session Wednesday evening, and residents will submit ballots via a drive-up process on March 9 at the elementary school.
Saturday’s session lasted an hour and a half, with 55 people attending. Many articles went by without comment. The Hancock Select Board named Sgt. Thomas Horne as the new police chief in Hancock at their meeting Monday afternoon. Horne, who currently works for the police department in town, is set to be sworn in in January. The new chief will operate under a contract, Select Board Chair Laurie Bryan said, something that had not been a part of the town’s agreement with outgoing police chief Andrew Wood, with whom they signed a separation agreement in August and whose last day is Dec. 31.
The Board looked into restructuring the police department after Wood announced his resignation, Bryan said. They reconsidered how many officers and cruisers the town really needed, and discussed the possibility of forming a regional partnership with other towns, she said.
