APS reverses course: COVID testing for athletes will be voluntary

.... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... Spring-sport athletes in Albuquerque Public Schools may decline to be tested for COVID-19 without fear of having their playing privileges stripped from them. That was the message Thursday from APS Superintendent Scott Elder in a letter he sent to principals and athletic directors of the district’s 13 high schools, informing them of APS’ abrupt change in policy. “While we are within our rights to require testing, it wasn’t the state’s intent to penalize students who choose not to be tested,” Elder wrote in the letter obtained by the Journal. He also cited some public outcry as reason for the change.

His final day with the district, where he began in 1997 when Rio Rancho High School opened, is June 30. He said, despite the disappointment and frustration of not seeing the Rams and Storm in action this school year, his decision isn’t the result of the pandemic: “This has been in the cards for a couple years now,” he said, closing a 38-year career in high school athletics.

New Mexico & the PPP

Unprecedented. It’s a word that’s been used to describe nearly every facet of life over the past 12 months as the coronavirus continues to radically alter the way most people go about their lives – whether that’s going to the doctor’s office, attending school or making a trip to a grocery store. But it also aptly describes the level of federal funding pumped into the economy through various stimulus programs including the Paycheck Protection Program. ...................... “We’ve never dealt with anything like this before,” John Garcia, director of the Small Business Administration New Mexico office. “… This has been very different. This is a virus that we are at war with.”

Harrison: Solutions to Lobo hoops mess aren't easy or obvious

.... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... Prior to Saturday’s brunch-hour Lobo tipoff, somebody tipped me off to this: For all the New Mexico men’s basketball stress coming into Saturday, they’d (1) won the games they were supposed to win and (2) lost to the league teams expected to be superior. Well, as for (1), that got shot out of the sky big time, didn’t it? Given Saturday’s opponent (San Jose State, minus its top scorer), the margin of defeat (83-71) and other context (the Lobos had just drubbed this team two days earlier), can you recall a more dispiriting defeat by your UNM basketball team?
