Larry King s Best Music Interviews

Larry King, 1933-2021

Print this article These days, it’s hard to imagine a time when a plurality of the population agreed on anything, especially media consumption. Strange as it sounds to say, for 25 glorious years, Larry King was the glue that helped hold a grateful nation together. From 1985 to 2010, when King commandeered the 8 p.m. hour of CNN as the host of Larry King Live, basic cable subscribers of every ideological stripe or none at all could gather to spend time in the company of an essentially neutral arbiter of the day’s news, gossip, or scandals. Following a decade in exile from mainstream cable news, King died on Jan. 23 at the age of 87.

Larry King Dead At 87

Always wearing his signature suspenders, King conducted more than 30,000 interviews, which included every president from Donald Trump back to Gerald Ford. With his knack for getting his subjects to open up, he became known for landing big interviews. I remind myself every morning: Nothing I say this day will teach me anything, he famously said. So if I m going to learn, I must do it by listening. The Larry King Show eventually became a destination for top celebrities and influencers of the day, including Frank Sinatra, Prince, Stephen Hawking, Joan Crawford, Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi, Robin Williams, Lady Gaga, Hillary Clinton, and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

But true “Larry Lovers” remember him first as a radio guy hosting a late night phone-in program starting in the late 1970s. That radio program – Mutual Broadcasting’s Larry King Show – once did a live national broadcast from the Space Needle in Seattle. KIRO Radio was the first Seattle station to carry the Larry King Show, beginning right about the time the program first came on air from Washington, D.C., in the spring of 1978. In April 1980, the show moved from KIRO to KVI, which had recently adopted the news-talk format.
