Lamesa mourns fallen Concho County deputy who was raised on the South Plains View Comments Friends, family and fellow law enforcement officers from around the area gathered at Lamesa s First Baptist Church Monday afternoon to celebrate the life of Concho County Deputy Samuel Leonard. Leonard and Concho County Sheriff s Sgt. Stephen Jones died in the line of duty after they were dispatched the evening of May 10 to the 100 block of Bryan Street in Eden for what began as a dog complaint but quickly escalated into a confrontation with a neighbor. Leonard, 26, was a longtime Lamesa resident who had only left the Dawson County Sheriff s Department, where he worked for about a year, just three weeks before taking the job in Concho County. He leaves behind a wife and young daughter.

View Comments EDEN, Texas As condolences and fundraising events pop up around the country for the two Concho County deputies slain Monday in Eden, efforts to help the lone survivor of the deadly shooting are also underway. Texas Rangers later arrested Jeffrey Nicholas, who was booked into Tom Green County Jail on two charges of capital murder of a police officer. His bond has been set at $4 million. Authorities said Nicholas later apologized for killing both deputies and injuring Winans. What happened: Winans critically injured during deadly shooting An eyewitness to the shooting said the incident began over an animal complaint and quickly escalated into violence.

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the drivers that take patients and their families from parking decks and the Ronald McDonald House to UNC Medical Centers have been of critical importance. “They’re very friendly, really nice people,” said Laura Davis, “and regardless of COVID-19, they came in and were committed to their jobs and showing up.” Davis said the shuttle drivers are committed to showing up 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. In addition, the drivers lend an ear to hear the stories of those who are heading to the medical center.

Visitation for Sgt. Jones will be held on Tuesday, May 18 from 6-8 p.m. at San Angelo s Johnson’s Funeral Home, 435 W Beauregard Ave. Funeral services will be on Wednesday, May 19 at 1 p.m. at PaulAnn Church, 2531 Smith Blvd., in San Angelo.
