As a young man, Tomcat Courtney learned the blues from musicians traveling through the hardscrabble Texas plains of the 1930s.
He brought those blues with him to San Diego in 1971, where he endeared himself to generations with his version of raw Texas blues with a dose of Chicago flavoring.
His authenticity rang true, and he shared his music not just with audiences several times a week, but with youthful musicians who were looking for realism in their own sound. Locally, the Spring Valley resident was often called the “godfather of the blues.”
Tom “Tomcat” Courtney died Monday at Sharp Grossmont Hospital, only days after suffering a stroke on Jan. 6. He was 91, just 12 days shy of turning 92.
The kind-hearted children in the Model School, Enniskillen are supporting the Enniskillen Salvation Army Family Appeal this Christmas. The aim of the appeal is to ensure that no child will go without a present on Christmas Day in Fermanagh this year. It may have been cold and frosty outside but that did not deter The Primary Five children from the Model as they set off on their act of goodwill for the community. The children walked to the Salvation Army in Halls Lane on Friday to deliver all of the lovely gifts that had been donated by the school community.
