OGDENSBURG Discussions over whether or not to the county should take over some of the city’s law enforcement duties have begun.
St. Lawrence County Sheriff Brooks J. Bigwarfe and City Manager Steven Jellie met Thursday (July 29) to discuss launching a study on consolidating law enforcement duties between the city and county, said an official statement from the sheriff’s office.
The informational meeting was simply to obtain data and objectives towards consolidation from the city so the sheriff could review and discuss matters with other county offices, the statement said.
“As stated in the past, Sheriff Bigwarfe confirms that he will continue to support law enforcement in the County, which includes the City of Ogdensburg Police Department. TOWN OF DEKALB, N.Y. (WWNY) - Weâre learning more about a shooting that left one man dead just outside of Richville Tuesday morning. Itâs a story of a big fight, plenty of firepower, and maybe drugs.
âThe initial call was just an intruder and then when we got there, obviously, it was a homicide,â said St. Lawrence County Sheriff Brooks Bigwarfe.
Court documents allege at least two shots were fired in a trailer at 580 County Route 18 in the town of DeKalb.
CANTON â The St. Lawrence County and Jefferson County sheriffâs offices are participating in the annual honorary membership drive of the state Sheriffsâ Institute.
The Sheriffsâ Institute is a centralized training and program resource for all county sheriffâs offices and has operated The Sheriffsâ Camp at Keuka Lake in the Finger Lakes region for 45 years. More than 800 children from low-income families attend the summer camp each year, and the Sheriffsâ Institute covers the full cost of camp and transportation.
âIn these difficult economic times we cannot forget our youth who will not have the opportunity for a summer camp experience or a summer vacation,â St. Lawrence County Sheriff Brooks J. Bigwarfe and Jefferson County Sheriff Colleen M. OâNeill said in statements last week.

Apr 01, 2021 A small group of people gathered outside the St. Lawrence county courthouse in Canton to voice their opposition to the policing reform report approved by the St. Lawrence county legislature in December.
The report was put together by St. Lawrence County Sheriff Brooks Bigwarfe. Protesters said the sheriff and the county legislature could have done more to include people of color in the process that led to the final PowerPoint presentation that was sent to the state.
The protest was organized by the North Country Poor People’s Campaign. They claim that the sheriff did not seek input from the public particularly people of color about their experiences with his department. Jamey Merkel, with the North Country Poor People s Campaign, said the two public meetings in October were not enough to allow the public, especially people of color, to learn about the plan, share their experienc
