Objection filed over Massena Republican caucus not upheld by St Lawrence County Board of Elections

MASSENA — An objection that was filed with the St. Lawrence County Board of Elections regarding the Massena Republican caucus was not upheld during a vote last week. The objection alleged that the Board of Elections did not receive proper notice of the Massena Republican caucus. The required notices were published by local media for the two July 8 caucuses — one to nominate candidates for village mayor and the second to nominate candidates for town supervisor, town council, town justice and town clerk. “The objection was not upheld. That means that one voted to uphold and one voted to reject. Because it was not unanimous, the objection was not upheld,” St. Lawrence County Board of Elections Commissioner Thomas Nichols said.

Recall petition for Chesapeake mayor won t be on ballot; residents reviewing options | News

CHESAPEAKE, Ohio — The recall petition for Chesapeake Mayor Kim Oldaker won’t be on the November general election ballot, according to Lawrence County Prosecuting Attorney Brigham Anderson. “There is a removal process under Ohio law, but it doesn’t consist of a recall petition” in the village of Chesapeake, Anderson said. Mack Anderson, an assistant prosecuting attorney, reviewed the recall question at the request of the Lawrence County Board of Elections. Anderson said Chesapeake is a non-chartered municipality and thus is not authorized to have a recall election under Ohio law. Terry Griffin, a Chesapeake resident who collected signatures for the recall petition and filed it with the board of elections, said Thursday he knew a recall would be a tough battle.

St Lawrence County Department of Social Services launches new monthly reporting to legislators

CANTON — After several months of reworking how the Department of Social Services reports information to the St. Lawrence County Board of Legislators, a new framework was rolled out this week. For more than an hour during the board’s Services Committee meeting Monday night, DSS Commissioner Cynthia M. Ackerman presented data to lawmakers about staffing, caseloads, children in care and case outcomes, mostly related to Child Protective Services and Children’s Services. County Administrator Ruth A. Doyle, Assistant County Administrator Dylan M. Soper and DSS supervisors and staff worked to compile and track more detailed department data with Ms. Ackerman, who started as commissioner last summer. DSS reports specifically about CPS and Children’s Services were previously delivered periodically in a given year as simple statistics on caseloads and kids in the department’s care.

Two weeks remain for candidates to file for local races

IRONTON — With two weeks remaining, no candidates have filed for Ironton City Council or for school board seats in the Symmes Valley, Rock Hill, South Point and Ironton school districts. This is the year that nonpartisan seats on local school boards, township trustees, and city and village councils are up for election in the fall. The filing deadline is 4 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 4, according to the Lawrence County Board of Elections. The village of Chesapeake is seeking renewal of a 1.5-mill tax levy, while Fayette Township is seeking renewal of a 2-mill fire levy this fall, according to records in the county board of elections.
