Photo: Melanie Lukesh You may have heard of the Adirondack 46ers, the Saranac Laker 6ers, or the Tupper Lake Triad. Well now, St. Lawrence County is launching a hiking challenge of its own. Brooke Rouse, director of tourism for the Chamber of Commerce, says the challenge is called the Great Eight.   We decided to design the Great Eight and have multiple themes around that and launch the three at the same time so that it would really get people out across the county and on different trails.

Wednesday, May 12, 2021 - 9:19 am CANTON As spring pops in the North Country, a new trail challenge invites people of all interests and abilities to explore St. Lawrence County, while earning their “Great 8 badge.” New York’s newest trail challenge is designed to attract avid outdoors people, young families, those new to the outdoors or those with limited ability. “Elevation is not a part of this challenge. As you experience the 8 trails in each challenge, you quickly realize that this part of New York is incredibly beautiful without the need for technical gear or extreme effort” said Brooke Rouse, Director of Tourism for the St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce. “The trails are diverse and an interactive trail site allows you to read about the experience before you get there, track yourself while walking and earn badges and the Great 8 Trail Challenge patch all online.”

Canada and the United States have most recently agreed to extend the ban on nonessential travel between the U.S. and Canada through May 21. Leaders in both countries first announced the border closure on March 21, 2020, and have extended the order on a near-monthly basis since.

St Lawrence Power & Equipment Museum plans big 2021 with three major events

There was also a cancellation of the Gathering of the Orange. The gathering has been rescheduled for June 2023. MADRID The St. Lawrence Power & Equipment Museum plans a big 2021 with three major events, among several others. The Annual Spring Exhibition will be held June 12 and 13 and will feature the Gathering of the Orange, a national meeting of Allis Chalmers enthusiasts. The Civil War Weekend, held in conjunction with the St. Lawrence County Historical Association, will be at the Museum’s Ft. Tribute July 24 and 25. The Annual Old Fashioned Harvest Days Exhibition will be Sept. 4 and 5. The Heritage Fibers Center and Blacksmith Shop will hold classes. The Pumpkin Patch Party for children will be in October. School groups and others will have special tours, and visitors

Schumer urges American, Canadian governments to work together to reopen border

MASSENA — U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer urged the United States and Canadian governments to work together to reopen the border as quickly and safely as possible during a stop Wednesday afternoon at the Massena International Airport. Canada and the United States have most recently agreed to extend the ban on nonessential travel between the United States and Canada through May 21. Leaders in both countries first announced the border closure on March 21, 2020, and have extended the order on a near-monthly basis since. “We all know that border crossings are the key in the north country economy. It’s estimated that Canadian travelers, over 2.3 million of them in 2019 came through the three land ports of entry along the St. Lawrence River and they contributed hundreds of millions of dollars to the north country’s economy,” Sen. Schumer said.
