Some MCPS students push back on Elrich's school safety task force

Community resource officer model and student representation inadequate, group says April 28, 2021 | 5:18 pm April 29, 2021 share this A group of Montgomery County students is pushing back against a new task force aimed at “reimagining” school safety, saying it does not do enough to remove police from buildings and fails to prioritize students’ input. During a press conference last week, Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich and representatives from the County Council, school district, police department and health department announced the new task force to “reshape public safety” and provide more mental health support to students. The initiative focuses on removing school resource officers (SRO) from buildings and replacing them with a “community model.” Officers would not be stationed in schools. Instead, they would patrol larger geographic areas around schools.

Lodge wins Coach of the Year, players recognized in OVC awards Posted By: Simon Elfrink April 22, 2021 Rachel Essner ressner1@murraystate.edu The Murray State soccer team closed out the 2020-21 season after a loss in the OVC semifinals game against SEMO on Thursday, April 15. Prior to the tournament, Murray State was awarded a multitude of regular season awards, as well as the OVC Regular Season Championship. The Racers were awarded five honors among seven members, a tie for the most awards in program history with the 2008 and 2017 seasons.  Senior defender Izzy Heckman closed out her career with the Racers by earning two OVC honors. Heckman was named to the All-OVC First Team for the second time in her career and earned OVC Defender of the Year, the second player in program history to do so after Tara Isbell in 2008. Heckman tallied two assists in the season and defended the back line, keeping  opponents to a total of only nine goals in the season and three shutouts. 

Barnthouse's hat trick powers Racers past EIU

Posted By: Simon Elfrink April 9, 2021 Rachel Essner ressner1@murraystate.edu The Murray State soccer team finished their regular season at Cutchin Field against Eastern Illinois University on Tuesday, April 6, where the Racers dominated with a 4-0 win to finish 9-1 overall. The Racers were quick to score as freshman forward Chloe Barnthouse finished a rebound shot from senior forward Rebecca Kubin in the third minute to give the Racers a 1-0 advantage.  Sophomore forward Lilly Strader doubled the Racers’ lead in minute 13 after finding the net off a pass from sophomore midfielder Lauren Payne, putting the Racers ahead 2-0.  Murray State kept the 2-0 advantage into halftime, outshooting the Panthers 13-5 in the first half.
