Signs of unpleasant geopolitical rumblings in the Igad cluster are visible within and outside each of the countries. Eritrea, on the Red Sea, punches above its geographical and demographical size and often appears like the friction instigator in the Horn of Africa.
Its differences with Kenya are over the Al Shabaab terror group that operates in Somalia as if they own it. Other Horn of Africa countries have rumblings that disturb the neighbourhood. Kenya, the most stable, faces 18 months of intense political friction as power aspirants Raila Odinga and William Ruto fight to succeed Uhuru Kenyatta in August 2022. The hope is that their power struggle would not deteriorate into repeat violence.

US Army General Stephen Townsend visited Manda Bay airfield camp in Lamu County, a year after a deadly attack by Al Shabaab militia.
The weekend visit was the second by Townsend, the commander of US Africa Command.
He jetted to Lamu in late December to oversee US troops’ operations and check on security matters.
The attack on Manda Bay airfield camp last year claimed three lives and left a trail of destruction.

Baringo Senator Gideon Moi has called upon political leaders to respect President Uhuru Kenyatta.
He said this while on a tour of Faza Island in Lamu East Constituency in Lamu County, where he was on a Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) popularisation campaign.
“Let all Kenyans respect President Uhuru Kenyatta. He is the President till August 2022 and when he leaves, whoever will be elected will also want to be respected,’’ said Moi.
Moi said the benefits of BBI to Lamu East residents are many and therefore asked them to support it.

NAIROBI, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) troops on Sunday killed three al-Shabab terrorists in a raid in their camp in the vast Boni Forest, Lamu County in the coast region, an official confirmed.
Gabriel Musau, head of the Coast police, said that the special forces, in the dawn raid, killed the terrorists and recovered communication equipment and weapons that were being used by the terror group to wreak havoc in the Lamu area that borders Somalia.
During the attack near Bothai, KDF soldiers also arrested one terrorist and are holding him for interrogation.
Musau said they had intensified operations in the area following reports of the terrorists sightings there. Enditem
