Garissa Senator Yusuf Haji was yesterday buried at the Lang ata cemetery in Nairobi, hours after his death.
Haji, 80, died at Aga Khan Hospital after a long illness. The long-serving politician and career civil servant had returned to the country a few days earlier from Turkey, where he was on treatment.
Mourners made their way to his residence tucked away on Riverside Drive in Nairobi, while others converged in Ijara, the constituency where the senator was born. He represented Ijara in the National Assembly for three terms.
He also blamed politics for conflict over water and pasture.
“When we are moving towards an election, you see an escalation in inter-communal tensions, some of them relating to pasture. But if we are being sincere, some have a relation to political activity,” the CS said.

Baringo Senator Gideon Moi has called upon political leaders to respect President Uhuru Kenyatta.
He said this while on a tour of Faza Island in Lamu East Constituency in Lamu County, where he was on a Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) popularisation campaign.
“Let all Kenyans respect President Uhuru Kenyatta. He is the President till August 2022 and when he leaves, whoever will be elected will also want to be respected,’’ said Moi.
Moi said the benefits of BBI to Lamu East residents are many and therefore asked them to support it.

Kanu chairman Gideon Moi has hinted at plans for a political alliance ahead of the 2022 General Election.
The Baringo senator, who was at a Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) sensitisation meeting at City Park, Nairobi, yesterday, said he is ready to work with like-minded leaders to form what he terms a super alliance ahead of 2022 polls.
Gideon said there are plans to field one candidate. “We are now building support for the BBI but when the time comes, we will work towards having one bullet,” Gideon said.
Succession politics dominated the meeting where various leaders voiced their support for the constitutional changes proposed in BBI, and which are expected to lead to a referendum next year, as well as for Gideon’s bid for the presidency.
