Lifeguards are warning beach-goers to stay safe. MASS FISH KILL: Nutrient cocktail leads to second wave

Premium Content Subscriber only UPDATE 5PM: Up to 30 dead barramundi, catfish and eels have been found at the Gooseponds less than a week after the previous mass kill. The Mackay Regional Council said it was aware of the incident and was monitoring the area for fish kills. The previous fish kill had wiped out 98 boney bream, one barramundi and one tilapia. Mayor Greg Williamson said the Azolia plant had been breaking down due to the hot weather. “This may be contributing to the low oxygen levels in the water, which can cause fish kills,” Cr Williamson said. “Council is monitoring the area regularly for fish kills and endeavours to clean up any dead fish as soon as possible.
