Behind the scenes ballots: Va. GOP pick their nominees
Winsome Sears, an âunapologeticâ conservative who was the first Black Republican woman elected to the Virginia General Assembly, captured the partyâs nomination for lieutenant governor Tuesday night, outlasting former Del. Tim Hugo of Fairfax County in a fifth round of ballot counting from Saturdayâs state GOP convention.
Sears, who emigrated from Jamaica at age 6, joins Del. Jason Miyares, a Cuban American who is running for attorney general, on a GOP ticket headed by Glenn Youngkin, the partyâs nominee for governor.
Sears, 57, who served one term in the House of Delegates from 2002-2004, is seeking an achievement that is exceedingly rare, if not unprecedented in modern Virginia politics â a return to elective office after an absence of 18 years.

RICHMOND A Republican Party desperate to reverse its fortunes in a state it hasn t won for more than a decade turns its eyes Sunday to a hotel ballroom, where vote-counters will tally thousands of paper ballots over and over again by hand to come up with the party s nominees for governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general.
Six Republicans hope to earn a part-time salary to preside over the state Senate starting next year.
The job is lieutenant governor. And the $36,321 salary isnât the draw, itâs holding an office that puts the occupant one step from the governorâs mansion.
The lieutenant governor votes to break ties on most legislation in the Senate. Many Virginia governors once held the job, among them current Gov. Ralph Northam, U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., Democrats Doug Wilder and Chuck Robb and Republican John Dalton. The last Republican to hold the office was Bill Bolling, who served as lieutenant governor from 2006 to 2014.
