With COVID-19 risk still high in Lancaster County, high school senior celebrations must emphasize pandemic precautions [editorial]

With COVID-19 numbers still too high in Lancaster County, safety must be the priority at prom and other high school senior celebrations [editorial]

THE ISSUE As LNP | LancasterOnline’s Alex Geli reported Sunday, some Lancaster County high schools — including Columbia, Donegal, Hempfield and Solanco — “have canceled their proms outright, the second year in a row the pandemic has shut down a hallowed high school tradition. Several schools have yet to iron out plans. Some, like Pequea Valley and Octorara Area, are holding more traditional proms with health protocols in place. Others aren’t calling their event a prom at all, but a ‘promfest,’ ‘gala’ or ‘senior soiree’ in recognition of the fact that arrangements must stray from the traditional prom setup.” It used to be that senior year unfolded with predictability in its pomp and circumstance: Homecoming, senior recognition nights, the spring musical, prom, commencement.

Another year, another prom derailed by COVID-19: Here s what each school is planning

Two hours later, it was back on. Pfeiffer, whose daughter is a senior at Ephrata High School, had an inkling the cancellation announcement would come, as social gathering restrictions associated with COVID-19 have made it difficult for schools to plan a traditional prom. So, with the school’s blessing, she quickly finalized a reservation she had made at Clipper Magazine Stadium, home to the Lancaster Barnstormers baseball team and a popular destination for outdoor events during the COVID-19 pandemic, a month before. Since then, the 45-year-old mother of four and a group of Ephrata parents have planned their own prom, following health and safety guidelines like wearing masks and social distancing when eating, with the school pitching in to sell tickets.

Tim Dillard Announces Retirement

MLB Trade Rumors After an 18-year professional career, right-hander Tim Dillardannounced today that he’s retiring from baseball. For some MLBTR readers, Dillard may not be a familiar name at all. Others particularly Brewers fans may know him well for his lengthy minor league run and parts of four big league seasons in Milwaukee. Others may recall Dillard for his contributions to MLB Trade Rumors over the years. Dillard began doing some writing for MLBTR back in 2017, beginning with thoughts from early Spring Training that year and continuing, on occasion, through the 2018-19 offseason when he attended the Winter Meetings as a minor league free agent in search of an opportunity. The structure of his entries and his voice within them were uniquely Tim, and we were happy to host his writing over the years as he shared experiences, anecdotes and the more-than-occasional inanity from the road. You can check out his full archive here.
