A Lancaster student exempt from wearing a face covering due to having a hidden disability has stepped forward and told The Lancaster Tab that they have been “harassed” and “discriminated” against by Lancaster University staff members for not wearing a mask on campus.
The university’s policy regarding face coverings states that “Nobody is expected to provide evidence that they are exempt from wearing a face covering” and “It is up to all of us at Lancaster to be mindful and respectful in these circumstances.”
However, Emma told us that despite not being legally required by law and by the university’s guidelines to provide evidence for being exempt, she has experienced “distress” after staff members on campus have argued and insisted that she wear a mask or vacate the premises.
Students are petitioning for a nightclub named after its location to change its name - over associations to the city s slave trade.
The Sugarhouse Nightclub is located on Sugarhouse Alley in Lancaster and is run by Lancaster University s Student Union.
But undergrads think it should be renamed to ensure that vicious atrocities are not normalised or celebrated .
The stretch is so called after a city sugarhouse, which had provided funds the local economy and many of the buildings in the area.
But academics have pointed out its contents would have come from slave labour.
A petition has been set up and needs around 320 signatures to be considered, but currently has just shy of 200.

Petition calls for LUSU to rename The Sugarhouse
The name is connected to the city’s history of the slave trade
2 months ago
Students from Lancaster University have started a petition aimed at Lancaster University Students’ Union to rename the Student Union nightclub, The Sugarhouse. This is due to the name’s connections to Lancaster’s involvement in the transatlantic slave trade.
The nightclub is located on Sugarhouse Alley and the site of a 17th century sugarhouse and boiling-house. This was used to process sugar and other produce grown and harvested on slave plantations in the West Indies. At the time, Lancaster was the fourth largest slave trading port in Britain and many other aspects of the city remained attached to this legacy.
