A proposal to build a new 1,200-bed county prison on the sprawling property, next to Greenwood Cemetery and just south of the city, is the latest attempt to develop this well-situated land where others, at least over the past 50 years, failed.
It remains an open question why builders never got to this land just a seven-minute drive from Penn Square and zoned for residential use. That the land is tucked away behind a cemetery, out of sight and out of mind, may have played a role. But interviews with Kreider, local officials and real estate professionals suggest a number of factors, including limited road access, the prohibitive cost of building infrastructure like sewers, the quality of the soil for large-scale construction and, at least for the past 15 years, a family reluctant to sell.

Harrisburg Eviction Moratorium Extended Again
(Harrisburg, PA) Harrisburg s eviction moratorium is being extended for the fifth time since the beginning of the pandemic. Mayor Eric Papenfuse announced the extension on Friday. Under the moratorium, the city is suspending the eviction, ejectment or displacement of tenants or occupants from any residential dwelling unit as well as prohibiting water shut-offs for any delinquency or non-payment. (Swatara Township, PA) Authorities are investigating a murder suicide in Dauphin County. The incident happened around midnight on Friday at a home in the 600- block of Mohn Street in Swatara Township. Police say they were dispatched to a reported domestic incident, and that s when officers found a man and woman dead from gunshot wounds inside the house.
What happened: The township is selling the church property it owns at 551 Abbeyville Road.
Background: The township acquired the former church in February to serve as a potential home for the Lancaster Township Fire Department but then decided not to use it for that purpose. Officials sought a renter for the property, but none was found. So, the land will be sold. Bids are due by Aug. 2 with the results to be announced at the Aug. 9 supervisors meeting. The property consists of a 13,076-square-foot brick building constructed in 1992 on 2 acres.
