Even in the midst of rain, hundreds of veterans, their families, public officials as well as community members came out to the Texas Panhandle War Memorial Center for its Memorial Day ceremony Monday morning, remembering those in the Texas Panhandle and across the United States who lost their lives serving in the United States military.
This annual event was canceled in 2020 because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Perry Gilmore, the executive director of the center, said. It meant a lot to him to see the tremendous turnout this year.
“I think this just shows the support our community has for veterans and military service,” he said.
Members of the community also gathered at the Llano Cemetery Monday morning to honor those veterans from around the Texas Panhandle who are buried at the cemetery, as well as those who gave their lives while serving.
