A CHARITY is calling on the kind-hearted public to help give their vulnerable residents the garden of their dreams. Cumbria Community Homes is a Barrow-based charity whose mission is to provide a safe environment for the most vulnerable people in the community. Based in Lawson Street, the charity opened its development in December 2020 which allows 17 vulnerable people to live independently. The property is made up of self-contained flats and is manned round-the-clock to ensure occupants are kept safe. Since opening 17 months ago, the tenants expressed interest at having an outdoor space to grow vegetables, socialise and learn about nature. Eric Elrick, residential support worker at Cumbria Community Homes, set up a fundraiser for the wellbeing garden - which would cost around £13k - but the page only managed to raise £100.
But when she decided to raise money for charity her mother suggested one that deals with migraines. However, Poppy told her: Well cancer is the worst, isn t it?. My headaches get better but sometimes people with cancer don t. The remarkable thing about this story, is that Poppy is only five years old, with a wisdom and compassion of someone 10 times her age. She decided she wanted to help other children and she has - to the rune of £810 so far. Her mum helped her look at children s charities in Cumbria and she chose the one she wanted to support. Her hair - about 25cm of it -has gone to the Princess Trust to make wigs for other little girls and boys who need them and the money will go to Jigsaw, the children s hospice.

The dramatic confrontation ended shortly afterwards as police arrived. At Carlisle Crown Court, the man responsible for the attack, 33-year-old Darius Karlonas, was given a suspended jail sentence. Prosecutor Brendan Burke outlined how neighbours living near to the defendant s Lawson Street home, near Newtown Road, became concerned on October 4 last year after a dispute spilled violently on the the street. Witnesses saw one of the three Lithuanian men involved lying on the street, defenceless while the others argued. This defendant was seen to kick the man on the ground hard in the face, said Mr Burke. He was also seen to hold a knife to the neck of the man on the ground.
