Vanguard News Lagos East: Tribunal strikes out APM’s petition against Senator Abiru On By Onozure Dania THE National Assembly and State House of Assembly Election Tribunal sitting in Ikeja, Tuesday, struck out a petition by Allied Peoples’ Movement, APM, challenging the December 5, 2020 election victory of Senator Adetokunbo Abiru. The three-man panel struck out the petition while granting an application by APM and its candidate, Olusola Babatope to withdraw the petition. The panel is chaired by Justice Bassey Ikpeme with Justice Mohammed Abubakar and Justice M. Odanya as members of the team. Abiru, following his victory at the poll, represents Lagos East’s senatorial district in the National Assembly.

Borno: Zulum secures FGC admissions for 959 out-of-school girls, boys  On By Ndahi Marama – Maiduguri Borno State Governor, Prof Babagana Umara Zulum, has facilitated admissions, into Federal Government Colleges for 959 boys and girls from 16 local government areas, who had been out of school as a result of displacements by Boko Haram. Of the 959 citizens, admissions were secured for 774 girls into Federal Government Girls College, Monguno which currently operates a temporary site in Maiduguri; while 185 boys were taken to Federal Government College, Maiduguri. In the first phase of implementing Zulum’s multi-dimensional strategies on basic education, the executive secretary of the newly established Borno State Education Trust Fund, Alhaji Maina Yaumi, on Wednesday formally welcomed 185 boys into JSS 1 at FGC Maiduguri for the commencement of studies.

A bill to prohibit the casualisation of employment in the private and public sector in Nigeria passed second reading in the Senate on Thursday, February 18, 2021. The bill seeks to abolish the culture of contractual staffing in the workforce, with many lawmakers noting that it is detrimental to the nation s economy. Contract employees are typically employed on a non-permanent basis without benefits such as health insurance, paid leave, and other compensation enjoyed by full-time employees. Sponsor of the bill, Senator Ayo Akinyelure (Ondo Central - PDP), described casualisation of employment as an immoral strategy of cutting cost by employers. He complained that many workers in sectors such as telecommunications, oil and gas, mining, steel, banking, and insurance are engaged as casual labourers.
