LAFAYETTE, La. â The recently appointed member of the Lafayette Library Board of Control proposed a change to the libraryâs current mission statement and limiting some services that are currently offered.
The mission of Lafayette Public Library is to enhance the quality of life of our community by providing free and equal access to high-quality, cost-effective library services that meet the needs and expectations of our diverse community for information, life-long learning, recreation, and cultural enrichment.
During its regular meeting on Monday, one of the board members, Robert Judge, proposed removing ârecreationâ and âcultural enrichmentâ from the libraryâs mission statement.
A majority of the Lafayette Parish Council backed the renewal of a parishwide property tax supporting the Lafayette Public Library System Tuesday as they voted to put the renewal before voters on Saturday, Oct. 9.
The parish council voted unanimously to put the renewal of a 1.84-mill property tax that brings in just over $4 million for the parish public library system each year on this fall’s ballot for renewal alongside a pair of other renewals and a rededication to fund parishwide fire protection.
The rededication proposal that would ask voters to split the parish’s current 2.21 mill property tax for the parish health unit into two smaller taxes a 1.98 mill parish health unit tax and a 0.23 mill tax for parish-wide fire protection, which would generate about $500,000 for fire services.
