Most York County schools plan traditional graduation ceremonies

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced this week that people who are fully vaccinated may forgo masks in most public spaces. Despite the announcement, Downs said South Western High School will still mandate masks for the ceremony.  Spring Grove Area High School also is hosting one traditional graduation ceremony with masking and social distancing requirements, but Principal Dave Dietrich said that could change if state guidance continues to relax. Dietrich said he is happy that his school can offer an in-person ceremony for its graduates, given that at the start of the year, many education officials doubted whether any school buildings would even keep their classrooms open.

Northeastern, Southern school districts close a school Friday due to COVID-19

York Dispatch Northeastern and Southern York County school districts each closed one school Friday after seeing a rise in COVID-19 cases linked to their buildings.  Northeastern closed Shallow Brook Intermediate School after recording two recent COVID-19 cases at the building, according to a district announcement Thursday night. Southern closed Shrewsbury Elementary after recording six cases within a 14-day window, according to the district s online COVID-19 dashboard. Both schools are set to reopen to students Monday.  This is not the first recent COVID-19 closure for either district. Northeastern closed Mount Wolf Elementary, Orendorf Elementary and Spring Forge Intermediate in April, while Southern closed Shrewsbury Elementary a separate time and Susquehannock High School the same month.

Retiring the Susquehannock Indian warhead logo was the right decision

Deborah Kalina The Southern York County School Board made the right decision to retire the district’s Indian warhead logo. It certainly wasn’t a popular one for many in our community who voiced their preference in a survey to retain the logo. Although 60 percent surveyed also indicated that we should consider Indian perspectives in our decision. I can tell you that it wasn’t a foregone conclusion for the board. Frankly, I had no idea the motion would pass until we got to roll call. It took great courage, leadership and reflection by the board to vote in favor of retiring the logo, especially for those members who are alumni of Susquehannock High School and have generational roots in our community.
