More than 1,800 educators vaccinated throughout region | News, Sports, Jobs

pcrossley@sungazette.com Over a four day period recently, over 1,800 educators in Intermediate Unit 17’s region received vaccinations for COVID-19, according to Dr. Christina Steinbacher-Reed, executive director of the intermediate unit. As part of a statewide initiative, intermediate units were tasked by the governor to play a central role in providing an opportunity for the vaccinations. “As part of these statewide efforts, Intermediate Unit 17 partnered with local districts to vaccinate educators and staff from across Bradford, Lycoming, Sullivan and Tioga counties,” Steinbacher-Reed said. The initiative included educators in K-12 schools or career technology centers as well as a number of private and non-public schools.

East Lycoming School District eyes potential tax increase | News, Sports, Jobs

pcrossley@sungazette.com HUGHESVILLE Although it’s still in the preliminary stages, the budget figures for the East Lycoming School District revealed a possible .58 increase in the real estate millage for the 2021-22 fiscal year. With this increase, the district’s millage would be increased from 14.38 to 14.96 and residents could expect to see an extra $58 per $100,000 of their property’s assessed value, added to their tax bill. This first budget presentation was made by Heather Burke, District Business Manager, at the school board’s meeting Tuesday. The final budget is expected to be approved in May. The proposed general fund budget of $26,747,820 reflects a total increase of $647,700 or 2.59 percent over the 2020-21 budget.

Due to COVID and staffing concerns, the Jr/Sr High School will remain in remote instruction through January 6th. Jr/Sr High students will return to in-person instruction on Thursday, January 7th. Richard 'Dick' W. Hafer | News, Sports, Jobs - Williamsport Sun-Gazette

Richard “Dick” W. Hafer, 77, of Hughesville, passed away on Monday, Dec. 28, 2020. Richard was born Dec. 15, 1943 in Sunbury and was the son of the late Joseph M. Hafer and Dorothy E. Renn. He married Rose Marie Shafer on August 18, 1973 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church of Williamsport. His wife of 46 years preceded him in death on March 24, 2020. They raised two sons, Richie, and Nathan. Richard was a teacher in the East Lycoming School District retiring in 2003 after teaching for 38 years. He taught mathematics and computers at Hughesville High School. Dick was a graduate of the former Sunbury High School, Class of 1961, and earned his bachelor’s degree from Susquehanna University in 1965.
