Thibodaux city marshal offering two $500 college scholarships. Here s how to apply
Applications are being accepted for a scholarship program launched by Thibodaux City Marshal Calvin Cooks Sr.
The two $500 scholarships are available for graduating high school students who live in the Thibodaux area and are planning to attend Nicholls State University or Fletcher Technical Community College.
Applicants must be a permanent resident of Thibodaux and must be eligible for admission to the college listed on the application, officials said.
The scholarships will only be paid for full-time undergraduate attendance at Nicholls or Fletcher.
“The scholarship is a gift, not a loan, and is awarded to defray the rising costs of tuition and related expenses in higher education,” Cooks said. “There are no restrictions on the purposes for which the scholarship is spent.”

Calvin Cooks Sr., the first-ever Black person elected Thibodaux city marshal, was sworn in Tuesday in the presence of public officials, campaigners, family and friends.
The city marshal serves a six-year term. Judge Mark Chiasson led the swearing in at Thibodaux City Court for Cooks with his wife LaShana by his side.
“(Thibodaux voters) don’t look at skin color,” said Lafourche Parish Council member Jerry Jones, “they look at who can do the job.”
Cooks comes to the job from a background of over 30 years in law enforcement both with the Thibodaux Police and Lafourche Sheriff’s Office, as well as a bus driver with Lafourche Parish School Board.
