Calvin Cooks Sr., the first-ever Black person elected Thibodaux city marshal, was sworn in Tuesday in the presence of public officials, campaigners, family and friends.
The city marshal serves a six-year term. Judge Mark Chiasson led the swearing in at Thibodaux City Court for Cooks with his wife LaShana by his side.
“(Thibodaux voters) don’t look at skin color,” said Lafourche Parish Council member Jerry Jones, “they look at who can do the job.”
Cooks comes to the job from a background of over 30 years in law enforcement both with the Thibodaux Police and Lafourche Sheriff’s Office, as well as a bus driver with Lafourche Parish School Board.
