Theatre and cultural activist Saiful Islam Mahmud passed away last night. Renowned thespian Nasiruddin Yousuff Bachchu confirmed the news to The Daily Star.
Mahmud, a freedom fighter, was the younger brother of noted actor Raisul Islam Asad. He participated in the anti-authoritarian movement in Bangladesh, alongside other cultural activists. He served as a founding member of Dhaka Theatre, Bangladesh Gram Theatre, and Cholochitro Sangshad Cine Art Circle. He was also an active member of Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation and Bangladesh Pothonatok Parishad, among other organisations.

A Dhaka court today placed Rezaul Haque alias Reza, in-charge of the banned militant outfit Jama atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), on a seven-day remand in connection with a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Moinul Islam passed the order after Investigation Officer SM Raisul Islam, also an inspector of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of police, produced Reza before the court with a ten-day remand prayer in the case filed with Vatara Police Station in November last year, court sources said.
A CTTC team arrested Reza from the capital s Badda area on April 10.
