Seventeen legislatures are considering laws that would dictate how medical personnel can treat transgender youth the latest flash point in the culture war.
Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson surprised observers this week when he vetoed one of those bills. It would have outlawed puberty blockers, cross-sex hormone treatment and “gender affirming” surgeries for children.
The Arkansas legislature and 16 others are attempting to big-foot a complex issue. With rare exceptions (such as limitations on assisted suicide and abortion), legislatures are not the best place for decision-making about medical issues. But in our hyper-hysterical culture, it’s becoming less and less possible to engage in these debates where they belong in the realm of science and journalism.

Claiming it’s a case of “vast government overreach,” Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson (R) announced Monday he vetoed legislation that would have blocked minors from undergoing sex-altering procedures and hormone therapies.
The state’s Republican-led Senate passed the proposal, H.B. 1570, by 28-7. If approved, the legislation would have forbidden doctors from prescribing hormone therapies and puberty blockers to or performing sex-altering surgeries on minors suffering from gender dysphoria.
Hutchinson, though, argued the bill was nothing more than a “product of a cultural war in America.”

Arkansas Legislature Overrides Veto To Ban Genital Mutilation Of Children
The majority-Republican Arkansas General Assembly voted Tuesday to override Republican Gov. Asa Hutchinson’s veto of a bill banning experimental genital mutilation and hormone treatments for those under 18-years-old.
The passage of HB 1570, the Save Adolescents From Experimentation Act, makes Arkansas the first state in the union to prohibit doctors from administering hormone treatment, puberty blockers, or other treatments to minors. The veto passed in the House at a vote of 71 to 24 and in the Senate 25 to 8.
Hutchinson vetoed the legislation on Monday, which originally passed on March 29. The governor claimed the measure was a “product of the cultural war in America” and violated the relationship between a doctor and patient.
