It was a sight that shook the world: Images of a violent pro-Trump mob storming the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to stop the certification of the presidential election, threatening lawmakers’ lives, flying the Confederate flag in the building’s halls and erecting a gallows outside.
But the chaotic and deadly end of Donald Trump’s presidency was in many ways the inevitable result of four years of a president who stoked distrust, divison, anger and racism and ultimately sought to undermine the election itself, with large swathes of his party echoing his claims.

FRONTLINE, the PBS investigative documentary series, announced that it has acquired A THOUSAND CUTS the new film from award-winning filmmaker Ramona S. Diaz that offers an inside look at the key players in this escalating war between press and government in the Philippines and the ongoing threat against freedom of the press.
A THOUSAND CUTS examines social media disinformation campaigns and the crackdown on the news media in the Philippines by President Rodrigo Duterte – who has made Ressa one of his top targets. At great personal risk, Ressa, the chief executive of the independent news site Rappler has been at the forefront of holding Duterte and his government accountable for their violent war on drugs. In response, Duterte has barred Rappler reporters from the presidential palace, revoked Rappler’s license, and Ressa herself has been charged with a cyber libel case.
To get past information divides, we need to understand them first
“Only by becoming aware of competing narratives, and understanding why and where they take root, can we begin to do the sort of reporting that holds the powerful accountable while also building shared truths.”
Over the past year, it’s felt like the things Americans can’t agree on are growing more and more basic and more and more numerous. This trend has been amplified by the spread of misinformation at all levels of our society. It hasn’t been stemmed by a mainstream media that’s grown bolder in calling false claims false, or by social media platforms that have taken new steps around conspiracy-theorist content. Instead, people are simply seeking out different platforms and outlets that reflect their unadulterated views with our country growing more and more divided about reality itself in the process.
