The shooting happened around 2:15 a.m. Feb. 21 in the 4400 block of Watercrest Road. Anthony Newton, 25, was found suffering from a gunshot wound and was later pronounced dead at Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center. The case was presented to the grand jury on May 5 and charged 21-year-old Gregory Ellis with tampering with or fabricating evidence, Killeen PD spokeswoman Ofelia Miramontez said in a news release. So far, there have been five homicides in the city, two of which have not returned criminal charges. Officer Reynaldo Contreras, a five-year veteran of the department, was placed on administrative leave after the January 10 shooting. According to Public Information Officer Ofelia Miramontez, Contreras will remain on administrative duty until the investigation is over. Police officers are typically placed on administrative leave following a shooting and not allowed to return to work until taken off leave. Administrative duty means an officer can return to work but is not allowed back on patrol.
